Compared with the concept of "old town regeneration", which is biased towards historical conservation and sustainable development, many urban areas in China have already been facing the challenge of "new town reconstruction".
This is because the planning and construction of those new districts promoted by the explosive growth in the previous stage were hasty and of poor quality. Some factors that are vital for the long-term development such as pleasant environment, appropriate scales, mixed programs, urban vitality and living convenience are seldom considered. As the construction of these urban areas was basically completed and residents and companies gradually moved in, the problems resulted from lacking these factors began to emerge, and to solve them becomes increasingly urgent. In order to cope with these problems, with the physical environment of urban area basically fixed, we ought to get rid of the conventional thinking model and working methods that lays its emphasis on the macro structure in urban planning and change to the medium and micro level through detailed urban research, targeted urban design and architectural renovation.
This studio project focuses on Century Avenue, the core element of public space in Pudong District, where great changes should take place in order to get rid of the deep-rooted problems.
